What to do now if you want to job search in January

What to do now if you want to job search in JanuaryWhat to do now if you want to job search in JanuaryOnce the ball drops and the confetti has been swept away, many people consider the start of a New Year as an invitation to give every aspect of their life a critical eye. From a long-term relationship that should have ended seasons ago to accepting the undeniable number on the scale, January 1 not only presents a sense of fresh, but an opportunity to transform whatever is not quite right. If your current pain point is your career - whether youre in an unfulfilling gig, youre not compensated for your value or youre ready for the next step - beginning the job search in January is a smart move.As career expert Jill Tipograph explains, throughout the year there are lulls in the speed at which recruiting and selection decisions occur. Hiring teams thin out during the holidays, key managers take time off at the end of August, and then during the mid-November to end of December high trave l weeks, she explains. After everyone returns from the end of year holiday season, its back to business. Organizations will often make announcements regarding new leadership in key roles, announce recently promoted colleagues and unveil new organizational structures. But instead of brushing up your resume and reaching out to contacts starting in January, its actually far more strategic to cue up all of your ducks now to be in the best position to apply once the year begins. Even though the last quarter is typically a stressful, congested time, experts remind job seekers there is plenty of homework required to put your best foot forward. Here, ideas to prepare yourself for the endless flood of applications coming your way sooner than you think.Update your resume and LinkedIn profileYou scroll through Facebook and Instagram a few dozen times a day, but how much of your attention span is allocated to the social media networking app dedicated to your career? Likely, barely a fraction of your free time. Career and branding expert Wendi Weiner says this is a mistake, considering more than 94 percent of recruiters are sourcing out potenzial job candidates on LinkedIn.You must have an optimized LinkedIn profile in order to have a successful job search in the digital age. LinkedIn is the number one source for creating a powerful digital footprint that effectively brands you for your expertise in your respective industry, she continues.Once you have updated your profile to brag about your progress, advancements, and achievements, make sure you have the resume to match it. After all, once your digital record is impressive, the leads will start rolling in, and you dont want to waste any time sending over your resume when it is requested. Remember It is always recommended to ask a few trusted wordsmiths to look over your resume to omit any typos, grammar mistakes or confusing sentences. If you dont have a pal like this on your roster, invest in a resume editor to give it t he eagle eyes.Keep your resume focused on results and achievements and less focused on job responsibilities, Weiner adds.Enlist a buddy to keep you accountableMuch like losing weight, maintaining a fitness routine or resisting bread, having a buddy to ensure youre honest can be an impactful tactic when youre job searching. As career expert Joy Altimare recommends, find someone who perhaps is also unhappy with their current set-up and create a tag-team approach to applying. They can send you openings that fit your interests, look over your resume and regularly check in to make sure youre pacing toward your goals.Master skillsTake a quick glance at all of the skills you claim on your resume. While, sure, at some point, you could execute each of ansicht reasonably-well, now that youve been in the same job for a while, there are likely some lingering proficiencies that could use a touch-up. Tipograph recommends not only addressing hard skills, but the soft ones, too has a difficult mana ger impacted your confidence? Are you anxious about leading meetings? Now is the time to practice, refresh - and repeat.Get ahead of their needs so you can present yourself as having these, she shares. One way of doing this is taking a look at job openings so you can see exactly what your potential new employer is looking for. And ignite your network, who may have insider info in these areas specific to various industries or corporations, Tipograph says. And hey, since the weather outside is becoming increasingly more frightful, she recommends taking online or continuing education or boot camps to up your skills in targeted areas, or certifications in some can demonstrate mastery to prospective employers.Research companiesIf this isnt your first rodeo in applying for jobs or youre in no rush to leave unless it is the right opening, Weiner recommends dreaming a bit. How so? Consider the companies whose mission statement, culture and structure best matches your passions and interests. Then, research for not only lingering gigs you could apply for, but holes within their team you could pitch and fulfill.Make sure you have a targeted list of companies you are interested in applying to. Create a spreadsheet that focuses on these target companies, target key players at these companies, and begin to keep track of when you reach out to them, she suggests.Plan out your interview wardrobeMidway through January, you finally get a call a job that excites you. Your resume is polished, your interview questions are practiced and seamless but you have nothing to wear. Dressing for your first meeting with a promising team can be a stressful decision that can potentially distract you from prepping effectively and efficiently. Take advantage of holiday specials and stock up on clothes that make you feel your best.Start looking for a black or dark grey suit that would be a staple for your closet. There are lots of good sales happening around Veterans Day and Black Friday. Take up the opportunity to plan out the interviewing wardrobe, and potential new work clothes, she explains.Review your PTO and benefitsWhen youre ready to make moves, you should also be prepared to bargain for a better deal than youre currently earning at your current job. And no, we dont just mean your salary, but your paid time off, your benefits, your past reviews and more. Weiner explains since some employers allow you to cash out any leftover PTO, you can use that to your advantage when you give your resignation. If youre the sole provider of your individual insurance or your familys, understanding when your plan will end as you prepare to switch gigs will make sure youre in the best health situation. Studying up on this information also makes it easier to ask for more vacation days and better insurance when you receive an offer letter.Set up coffee meetingsNow is the time to put feelers out to your ideal list of startups or full-fledged companies to join. As Tipograph says, it can ta ke several months to finally get in front of someone, so it is never too early to start the process.Ensure you are flexible in your approach when asking for time to connect and discuss options. Be available when they are to follow up and if they cant follow up with you, ask if they know of others who it would make sense for you to get to know, she explains. And though you might receive a few brush-offs before you finally earn an invitation, but hold steady. When someone says, in November, We dont have anything right now, do not lose faith. Your efforts are essentially planting seeds for things that can arise in the New Year, Tipograph says.

Is Your Resume the Definition of Insanity

Is Your Resume the Definition of Insanity Is Your Resume the Definition of Insanity 2Splash Résumés, a personal branding studio that is out to change the way people look at résumés, and shes also a member. When Albert Einstein allegedly said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, he probably wasn’t talking about your résumé. But isn’t that exactly what most of us do? We submit the same dull, dreary résumé to employer after employer expecting to eventually hit the bull’s eye and land the job of our dreams. That sounds like insanity. You’ve written and rewritten your résumé, and you’ve held a microscope to each and every word. But that’s not enough these days. The explosion of social media and websites like Pinterest, Instagram and Etsy are examples of how our communication has evolved into a more visual style. We use pictures to tell our stories and sell our products, and it’s very effective. I often remind my clients that their résumés are marketing documents, not just lists of accomplishments and skills. And the purpose of a résumé, like any other marketing effort, is to sell something and position yourself in front of the hiring manager for an interview. In this case it’s you and your skills. So, go sell yourself! I also suggest that job seekers challenge the assumption that résumés must adhere to a certain set of rules. Says who? Instead of doing the same thing that everyone else is doing- over and over again- grab this opportunity to showcase your innovative, creative thinking with a unique résumé that reflects your personality. If you choose not to hire a professional, how can you make your résumé more creative on your own? Here are a few suggestions to make your resume more creative: Add small, appropriate images Use untraditional, yet readable fonts. (A favorite is Garamond) Try switching your layout from horizontal to vertical Add swatches of color Earlier this month, I read a blog post on about a successful job search using a creative résumé. I was so excited! And this is not an isolated case. There are many examples of job seekers using creativity to guide their résumé design. Our work is a huge part of our identity, especially in certain cultures. Working on résumés can be an emotional experience for both the résumé writer and client. I once heard of a colleague who gave her client this advice: a résumé is not a “career obituary.” This is so true! Use your résumé as a set of talking points to sell yourself in the interview. Certain fields may be known for conservatism and conformity. But, there are firms and interviewers looking for fresh talent and new ideas. What better way to stand out from the crowd than with an exciting résumé? If something works, stick with it. But if it’s not working? Change the method, and you’ll be sold to your ideal organization or firm in no time.

Why You Need to Be Competitive in Your Career - The Muse

Why You Need to Be Competitive in Your Career - The Muse Why You Need to Be Competitive in Your Career I consider myself to be a lot of things. But, overly competitive isn’t one of them. Of course, I always try to put my all into things and I want to make sure to do a solid job with everything I work on. But, that doesn’t mean I obsess over trampling over everybody else around me in order to earn the top spot. Believe me- I’ve learned that there’s a big difference between doing your best and trying to be the best. In fact, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to transform into more of a collaborator than a competitor. I’m a firm believer that the world would be a much better place if we all focused on supporting and encouraging one another- rather than throwing other people under the bus to garner more recognition for ourselves. However, I’ve also learned another important lesson: As nice as that all sounds, things don’t necessarily work this way when it comes to your own career. Let’s face it- careers are competitive. There are plenty of people out there who claw their way to the top of the ladder, with zero regard for the people desperately hanging onto the rungs below them. The working world can be frustratingly cutthroat at times. Unfortunately, as someone who’s not a born competitor- and can even be a little embarrassingly naïve- that’s a concept I had a tough time grasping when I was just getting started in my career. And, even more unfortunately, it’s something I came to grips with the hard way- admittedly, more than once. I’ve had a boss take credit for something I worked my butt off on, only to quite literally shut the door in my face when I attempted to speak up. I’ve had someone pose as an aspiring freelancer seeking advice, only so she could undercut my price on a project we were both bidding on. I’ve had a co-worker shift blame for his own mistake onto my plate, in a futile (and, unfortunately, successful) attempt to save face. See? I wasn’t lying when I told you that it was a difficult lesson that slapped me across my dumbstruck face on numerous occasions. But, as brutal as those experiences were, they illustrated something important about the way I approached the working world as a whole: Whether you’re a born competitor or not, you still need to have a little competitive edge in your career. Why? Well, to put it simply, everybody else out there is looking out for number one. So, unless you want to be repeatedly stomped all over, you’re going to need to do the same thing- at least to a certain degree. No, that doesn’t mean you need to be ruthless, aggressive, and condescending toward everybody else around you. And, without a doubt, you always want to be honest, ethical, and respectful. However, it’s important for you to remember that nobody cares as much about your career and your success as you do. As selfish as it sounds, more often than not, it’s up to you to keep your best interests front and center in order to take the necessary steps to achieve what you want. If you wait for other people to do it for you (or even to give you a loving, supportive push along), you’ll only wind up sorely disappointed. Trust me, I’ve been there. Regardless of how much competitive drive is required of me, I still absolutely never want to be that cutthroat professional who seems overly aggressive, intimidating, and downright unapproachable. But, you know what? I don’t want to be a doormat who’s easily taken advantage of either. And, as I found out the hard way, a certain degree of polite competitiveness is the secret to navigating that happy medium in your career. Personally, I’m now much more willing to hold my ground and take charge of my own success. So, no, I won’t throw you under the bus in order to improve my own competitive standing- but I won’t let you turn around and do that to me either. Are you a born competitor? Or, did you have to learn the hard way like me? Let me know on Twitter!

6 Simple Tips for Staying Thankful During a Tough Job Search

6 Simple Tips for Staying Thankful During a Tough Job Search 6 Simple Tips for Staying Thankful During a Tough Job Search 6 Simple Tips for Staying Thankful During a Tough Job Search Don’t let your job search drag the holidays down. Use these tips to remain positive throughout the season. When you think of the holidays, what comes to mind first? It may be family time, traditions, holiday cooking, resolution lists, or a number of other activities that spike over the course of November, December, and January. For those job seeking during this busy time, holiday activities that once evoked warm and fuzzy feelings may have a more negative undertone. How many more times will Aunt Sally ask how the job search is going? How will you balance family traditions with your attention-needing job search? Cookies become a crutch and before you know it, your resolution list is sky high and overwhelming. We've all been there. This year, don't let your job search drag your holidays down. Instead, make a conscious decision to stay positive and thankful for what you have, and the rest will fall into place. Here's how! Treat everything as a learning experience. Diane Gottsman, National etiquette expert and owner of The Protocol School of Texas, preaches rejection acceptance with grace. If you get passed over for a position, do not take it personally. Use it as an opportunity to learn what you could have done differently and build on your strengths and skills, says Gottsman. When you view a disappointing situation as an opportunity for learning, you'll be better prepared for the next job interview, Gottsman points out. Next time you interview, take a few minutes when everything is still fresh in your mind to jot down questions or talking points that gave you trouble. Use this list as a starting point to craft well-thought-out responses for your next job interview, and you'll feel more confident in no time. Better yet, take advantage of holiday family time to ask a trusted relative to conduct a mock interview with you and give feedback. Acknowledge and track what's working. This holiday season, take time daily to stop and give yourself a pat on the back. Career coach Susan Peppercorn suggests writing down three positive things that happen each day. This shifts thinking away from worries to paying attention to things to be grateful for that you may not be paying attention to, says Peppercorn. The good news: Your daily good things don't have to be monumental, but instead can be anything from how great your freshly baked cookies came out to catching up with a friend who is in town for the holidays. Finding joy in the small things that we often overlook can help elevate your entire mindset. Give back. Research shows that helping someone else lifts the spirits of the helper as much as the person being helped and causes both to feel grateful, says Peppercorn. The holidays are prime time to finally jump the gun on finding volunteer opportunities. From donating food to helping at a soup kitchen, there are a plethora of opportunities to help those in need. Resources like VolunteerMatch.org make it easy to find ways to give back to your community. Related:Why the Holidays May Be the Best Time of Year to Look for a Job Stay mindfully grateful. Author Tasha Mayberry says that consciously practicing gratitude will attract more things to be grateful for. She calls it a simple law of attraction. Thinking about what you have (family, friends, a home, etc.), and giving gratitude for those each day, will in turn bring more things to be grateful for your way. Mayberry recommends going through your gratitude list at the start of each day, adding in what she calls grateful intentions. Start by writing down things you feel thankful for, plus the things you feel gratitude for that have not happened yet, Mayberry suggests. Though they have not happened yet ... feel as if they [did] and truly believe it. This is a great exercise to try while looking for a job. Mayberry advises that job seekers believe [they] landed an interview, did so well, and got an offer. Visualize it and you increase your chances of it coming true. Career coach Katherine Street agrees with Mayberry. She references the research of Dr. Robert A. Emmons, who found that people with a greater sense of gratitude are less depressed and neurotic, and more agreeable and open traits that are attractive to employers, Street explains. During the rush of the holidays, set aside some me time in the morning to reflect on what you're grateful for. For mindful gratitude to be the most effective, Street advises doing this each day at the same time. You'll start the day with an air of positivity, and will be ready to tackle your to-do list. Erase negativity. According to Mayberry, our thoughts drive what happens and what we attract. If you want to move forward, it's important to remove all negative thoughts, such as you will not find work, and instead focus on how happy you'll be when you've found the perfect career. Mayberry recommends talking as if this positive outcome has already happened. J.P. Hansen, career expert and author of Find Your Bliss, agrees. You cannot attract positive results from negative thoughts, period as soon as negativity hits you, turn the other cheek ... and keep a positive attitude with gratitude, Hansen explains. Of course, this is easier said than done. Need help ridding your mind of negative thoughts? Check out Lifehack's 10 tips for removing negative thoughts from your mind. Focus on the prize. J.P. Hansen suggests spending time on what truly makes you happy. He explains, focus on your prize as if you already have it. Visualize yourself in your dream job and focus on it. Mayberry suggests creating a vision board of your ideal job or career. She recommends using magazine words and images, or drawing your vision. Visualize yourself doing well in the interview and getting an offer think about you in your new office or job, talking with new coworkers, etc. The more details you can add, the better, says Mayberry. The clearer your objective, the easier it will be to find what you're looking for. Need help starting your vision board? Check out The Huffington Post for some tips. When you stay thankful and positive, even in the toughest of times, you open yourself up for good things to find you. Try and remember that Thanksgiving is about giving thanks (not overstuffing stomachs). Successful job searches start with giving thanks! says Hansen. That's a mentality we can get behind. How to Find a Job in Just 18 Minutes a Day

How to Find a Job in Just 18 Minutes a Day How to Find a Job in Just 18 Minutes a Day According to the US Department of Labor, the average job seeker spends 18 minutes a day looking for a new job. It would be great if I could fulfill the promise of my title and tell you how to succeed doing the same, but of course I cant. Because 18 minutes a day IS NOT ENOUGH! Until I replaced my PC a few months ago, it took about that long for it to warm up in the morning! My hobby is drawing and Im currently working on a still life done in colored pencils. Ive spent more than 18 minutes on just one of the grapes! My big business project right now, as some of you know, is redesigning the Blue Sky website. Ive spent more than 18 minutes thinking about how comments should be displayed on the blog just one tiny part of just one of 22 pages! 18 minutes isnt even long enough for a decent walk. Whats really scary is that 18 minutes is an average. So for all you guys spending hours each day on your search, there are apparently 1,000 losers taking barely 2 minutes to scan Monster before falling back into bed! I suppose the good news in all this is that your competition is lazy. Photo courtesy of flickr.com/photos/bitchbuzz/ / CC BY 2.0

5 Tips on How to Prepare for the Next Recession

5 Tips on How to Prepare for the Next Recession 5 Tips on How to Prepare for the Next Recession Many Americans still shudder when they think back to the last recession. All told, 8.7 million people lost their jobs, and it took years for many families to dig out from the financial destruction. Since the recession officially ended in 2009, a question has lingered in the backs of American workers minds: Could it happen again? Yes, it can. Historical data shows that the US averages one recession every 6-7 years, which has led experts to predict that we are due for another downturn any day now. Dont panic. Consider the last recession your boot camp for surviving tough economic times. Now that you know better, you can do better. To that end, weve compiled five tips  to help you prepare for the next recession. Follow them, and you may avoid  devastation this time around: 1. Pay  Down Your Debts Step one in preparing for the next recession is to pay off any debt you have now. Tighten the reins on spending and throw  all the money you can at credit card balances and other debt. If you have money left over at the end of the month, sock the rest into a savings account. Credit card debt is the devil during a recession. Visa and Mastercard are going to want their money whether you have a job or not. In addition to avoiding interest on credit card balances, paying down your debt now will mean that you have more money available to you down the road, which could come in handy if your hours are cut or you lose your job altogether. Consider taking out a debt consolidation loan, which could help you save hundreds of dollars a month in interest fees, depending on what you owe. If you dont have any debt, pat yourself on the back - but dont celebrate with expensive purchases. Instead, sock away your extra cash for a rainy day. The more padding you have in your checking account, the better prepared youll be for the next recession. 2. Know  What Youre Up Against Some fields are more recession-proof than others. Healthcare, government, and some areas of tech have historically been safe during recessions, while retail, food and beverage, and hospitality roles have proven to be more vulnerable. If you work in an at-risk industry, consider making a career change into a field that might be more resilient. Think about your transferable skills and how they could be applied to a new career. For example, a retail workers skills would likely translate well to a customer service role. 3. Pursue a Side Gig With Lyft and Uber cars all over the roadways, and companies like Etsy and TaskRabbit going strong, the tech industry has created a bevy of earning opportunities for workers who are looking to supplement their incomes. While full-time workers would likely be giving up nights and weekends to pursue side jobs, diversifying your skills and not relying on one source of income makes great sense  during unstable financial times. Other ideas for side businesses might include babysitting, dog walking, or tutoring. Should a recession hit, and should you lose your full-time job, the side gig could be something to immediately fall back on while you work toward securing full-time employment again. 4. Focus on Networking The most powerful way to prepare for the next recession is to make networking a habit rather than an afterthought. When people lose their jobs unexpectedly, they often scramble to connect with their networks to find work again.  Savvy people dont wait until its an emergency to network. Consider what your next move might be now and create networking opportunities that support your goal. For example, if you hope to be promoted within your industry, study the LinkedIn profiles of people who hold the title youd like.  Identify  the skills and training you might need to obtain in order to make an upward move. If you are contemplating a career change, try to connect with people who hold the types of jobs you might be interested in. Ask if theyd be willing to sit for an informational interview. These types of interviews can be invaluable for making connections who can guide you in the best ways to parlay your transferable skills into a new career. 5. Update Your Resume and Cover Letter Like networking, a new resume should never be an afterthought. Having an up-to-date resume on hand means you are ready to leap when a great opportunity arises. The type of job you are looking for will determine whether your resume needs a quick update or a major overhaul. Learning how to write a resume that is right for your next career move is critical to your continued professional success. Dont forget the cover letter. Research shows that 45 percent of job seekers skip writing a cover letter when applying for work. While some job seekers operate under the false assumption that recruiters dont read cover letters, that isnt true. Cover letters are often an important way for a recruiter or hiring manager to distinguish between two similarly qualified candidates. If you and another candidate have similar educational backgrounds and have held identical job titles during your careers, your well-written cover letter may be the tiebreaker. - The specifics  steps you take to  prepare for the next recession will  depend on your circumstances. Regardless of your field, your financial situation, or your level of worry, taking steps now to safeguard yourself and your family will make even the most serious downturns feel less tumultuous. Catch this article - plus tons of exclusive content - in issue three of Recruiter.com Magazine. LiveCareer develops tools to help job seekers draft cover letters, prepare for interviews, and build targeted resumes via its  resume builder  and an extensive collection of  resume templates.

Tips for Outdoor Advertising Tactics, Strategies, and Methods

Tips for Outdoor Advertising Tactics, Strategies, and Methods Tips for Outdoor Advertising Tactics, Strategies, and Methods You see hundreds of outdoor advertisements every day, and even more if you live in a city like New York or Chicago. But your recall of these ads is probably close to zero. Doing outdoor advertising the right way is imperative, or its simply a waste.   Also known as out-of-home (OOH) advertising, outdoor advertising is a broad term that describes any type of campaign that reaches consumers when theyre outside their homes. It can be further segregated into more precise segments, but its all outdoor advertising if its outside the home. This is a mass-market medium, just like broadcast, radio, and television. Its best used for broad messages, branding, and support campaigns. Types of Outdoor Advertising Outdoor media is a staple because it reaches hundreds of thousands of people by foot, mass transit, or by car. Its usually very quick and impactful.  The most common forms of outdoor media include: Billboard advertisingPoint of sale displaysStreet furniture, such as bus shelters, kiosks, and telephone boothsTransit advertising and wraps, such as on taxis, buses, subways, and trainsMobile billboardsGuerrilla advertising, also referred to as ambient media Outdoor Advertising Comes of Age It used to be that an outdoor ad was simply a way to achieve brand awareness. Its not possible to convey a complex message on a medium that people will see for only a few seconds, or for a few minutes at most. This type of advertising was seen as support for TV, direct mail, radio, and print campaigns. It kept the product or service front of mind while it let other forms of media do the heavy lifting.   But with the advent of mobile technology and websites, outdoor advertising can drive people to do something instantly. From QR codes to simple web addresses, or even apps like Snapchat and Instagram, outdoor media can be a way to begin a conversation with the consumer, or to prompt an outdoor campaign to go viral.   Some outdoor advertising can become the focal point of an entire campaign, especially when it encompasses a stunt or drives interaction with users and their cellphones. Recent examples include the TNT Push To Add Drama stunt and the Pepsi Max Unbelievable bus shelter. Costs Associated With Outdoor Advertising Reaching hundreds of thousands of consumers isnt cheap, and as competition for billboard spaces increases, so do associated costs. Cost calculations are based on a system called gross ratings points (GRP), the impressions that are delivered by a media schedule for the outdoor location. This is called the daily effective circulation (DEC), also known as a showing. One rating point is equal to 1% of the market population. There are many factors involved based on traffic, visibility, location, and size. This rating gives you a showing score of anywhere from 1% to 100%. Halfway means that at least 50% of the areas population would see one of your boards at least once a day. You can expect to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a 50 showing for one month. The price will skyrocket in major areas like New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. Tips for Successful Outdoor Advertising Campaigns Approach your outdoor strategy with careful planning and precision to ensure that youre getting the most bang for your buck. We live in a world thats ruled by smartphones and other portable devices. The average consumers attention is drawn to a small screen in front of them, not to billboards and transit wraps. You have to break into that valuable attention span. Make your outdoor tactics shareable: Approach your outdoor advertising as something that will create a stir. People will see it, record it, and share it on social media. Its not a good use of your time and money if it doesnt possess this quality.Spend your money on high-traffic sites: You might be tempted to buy cheaper units and more of them, but its far better to go with one site that will get a million views rather than five sites that will get 800,000.  Look at the competition: Perhaps the best example of this comes from a billboard by Audi. It simply said, Your move, BMW. Then BMW put up a billboard a week later that said Checkmate. You dont want to leave yourself open to ridicule, so study the area and select sites that wont pose a problem.   Less is more: Outdoor advertising catches the eye for a second or two- if youre lucky. You dont want to saturate the ad with messages and calls to action. Keep it simple and let a few words and stunning visuals grab consumers attention. Think of outdoor media as a conversation starter. Its not there to inform, but merely to intrigue.   The Bottom Line Remember that an outdoor ad cant do the heavy lifting. Forcing it into this role will usually lead to a very cluttered and confusing message. Youre asking an awful lot of the consumer if you put more than 10 words of copy on a billboard.

The question isnt when we sleep, its how much

The question isn’t when we sleep, it’s how much The question isn’t when we sleep, it’s how much This week a sleep civil war broke out over at New York Magazine’s  The Cut. The first  shot was fired on Monday by Edith Zimmerman in a  piece  called “It’s Astounding How Many Problems Can Be Solved Just by Waking Up Early.” The spoiler is in the headline, but Zimmerman elaborates by describing what an “obscenely early” wake-up time, “like 5 or even 4 a.m.,” does for her. “Almost no one is awake then, so you can quietly and without being judged just get a bunch of stuff done,” she writes. She concludes by saying that while she hasn’t always been able to maintain that schedule, it’s still useful as “a turbo-charge button to press when confronted with a seemingly unsolvable problem or set of problems.”Controversy erupted. Twitter, as is mandated by Federal law, weighed in. As did, when they woke up and read the piece, the night owls.Zimmerman’s colleague Anna Silman returned fire with a spirited and hilarious piece of her own. “On behalf of The Cut’s motley collection of night owls, late-risers, and people who generally feel like they’ve been hit by a cement truck if someone tries to shake them awake before 9 a.m.,” she wrote, “I’m afraid I must dissent.” While allowing that being an early riser “makes you better at life,” Silman maintains being a night owl is “more badass.”And in any case, for Silman, it doesn’t matter, because, as she writes, “it’s physically impossible” for her to wake up before 9 a.m. She’s tried everything: “medications, booze, herbs, elixirs” and, yes, sleep tips from yours truly. But, she writes, “my body is trained to resist these things.” Silman concludes with a rousing call to arms to her late night brothers and sisters in arms (or beds): “So I say to you, my fellow night owls, let us band together and fight against the scourge of early-riser propaganda. Let us revolt! Let us sleep in! Let us look at the clock flashing 1:45 a.m. and say ‘Oh screw it, just one mor e episode!’ Let us be ourselves!”To which I say: Ladies, please! You’re both right. Possibly. The question isn’t whether you’re a lark or an owl, when you go to bed or when you wake up. The real question is how much sleep you’re getting between those two times, whenever they may be. The science says we need between seven and nine hours of sleep (unless you’re part of the one and a half percent of the population that has a genetic mutation - a single DNA sequence change causing a switch from proline to arginine in the 385th amino acid of the DEC2 protein). Yes, it’s true, chronotypes are real - some people are owls and some people are larks. And living a life out of sync with your chronotype can cause something called “social jet lag.” And that’s why “sleep stability,” maintaining a consistent sleep and wake schedule, is important. But even more important is that you’re getting all the sleep you need. People often rationalize short-changing sleep because o f all the things they need to get done during the day. But as sleep researchers have revealed, your brain is just as busy with its own high-priority action items at night. Taking time away from the sleep-time to-do list for the waking-time to-do list is not good. While we sleep, our brains are intensely active, taking care of things like memory consolidation, cognitive maintenance and neurochemical cleansing. As Dr. Maiken Nedergaard from the University of Rochester explains, it’s like bringing in the overnight cleaning crew to sweep the garbage that’s accumulated during the day - except in this case, the garbage is made up of toxic proteins that, when they build up, are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. “It’s like a dishwasher,” she said. “You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can’t really do both at the same time.” So the real issue is: Did you get all the sleep you need to complete th e cycle? Because if you didn’t, it’s like not completing the cycle of a dishwasher or a laundry machine  -  only with much more dire consequences. So if you’re a night owl, don’t let your real late night house party take away from the party clean-up your brain needs to do. And if you’re a lark getting up early to work, make sure you go to bed early enough to allow your brain to do its work - as Zimmerman’s and Silman’s colleague Katie Heaney wrote when she  weighed in: “[Sleep] might be the most unimpeachably human behavior there is,” she wrote. “You almost certainly need more of it, and you do that by setting aside a bigger chunk of time in which to do it.”And if you’ve really got a problem to solve, try sleeping on it - it really works. As John Steinbeck put it  Sweet Thursday, “It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.”So yes, be yourselves, listen to your bod y, and nobody needs to be sleep-shamed (including the night owls, whom, as Silman rightly notes, society is biased against). I only hope the sleep wars haven’t escalated at The Cut. Though I guess the fact that the two warring sides probably don’t actually see each other very much will keep the tensions down. This article first appeared on Thrive Global.

What I Learned From Taking the Wrong Job

What I Learned From Taking the Wrong Job What I Learned From Taking the Wrong Job Sometimes a job seems right on paper, but once you actually start, you find that you have made a terrible mistake . Maybe the hiring manager painted an untrue picture, maybe you approached the job wearing rose-colored glasses or maybe you were so eager to get out of your last position that you leapt without looking. Whatever the reason, every wrong job can still teach some lessons that benefit you long after you have moved on. That may not be evident as you head to work each miserable day, but keep your head up and consider your mistake a learning opportunity for next time. Jason  Hall :  In my 20s, I worked as a retail manager, and I took a   promotion  that involved transferring to another location about 40 miles from my home. The next year-plus turned into one of the hardest periods of my professional life. And it was essentially all because I went in with terribly wrong expectations. As a retail manager, long hours and working different shifts are commonplace. It wasn’t out of the ordinary to still be at the store at 10 p.m., only to have to be back in before 7 a.m. the next day if a truck was scheduled to deliver merchandise. Unfortunately, I went into the job with the expectation that it would be an easy transition and my personal and social life would not be affected. The reality was very different; between working longer hours, a much longer commute and a schedule that changed all the time, I was forced to reevaluate my concept of work-life balance and make some personal sacrifices for the sake of my career. To make a long story short, I sucked it up and worked hard to support my store and team, and I learned the value of hiring great people to take the burden off myself. I eventually earned another promotion to a better opportunity - and made sure I went into that new job with the right expectations . In the nearly 20 years since, I’ve avoided making the mistake of not really knowing what I was getting into, and it’s paid off immensely in helping me be a better employee and partner. And that’s helped me earn a lot of opportunities for advancement over the years. Maurie Backman :  When I first graduated college, I landed a job at a hedge fund that was exciting at first, but it went from interesting to awful in a matter of months. Not only was the environment abusive, but I really wanted a more creative role than the one I was in. But rather than stick it out for, say, a year, and then resign at that point, I wound up working there for almost five years. The reason? I was relatively well paid for someone my age, and I didn’t want to give that income up. I’ll be the first person to tell you that sometimes it   does  pay to follow the money. Like many people my age, I graduated college with a decent pile of debt and a pretty   pathetic amount of savings . My goal in working that job was to pay off my loans and pad my bank account   before   leaving. But once I reached those milestones, I made myself stay on even longer because of the money, even though I was miserable. In hindsight, it’s quite clear that my first job out of college was the wrong one for me, even though I managed to make the best of it. Staying at that job so much longer than necessary wound up being good for my wallet, but bad for my career. But I did learn one key lesson: Never take a job you won’t be happy with just for the money - at least not for the long haul. Frankly, life’s too short for that. Daniel B. Kline :   Early in my career I worked for a now-defunct newspaper company that had a reputation for not treating people well. In my first job with the company, I had a decent boss who insulated us from corporate, so I never really knew how little the CEO valued people. That changed when I first interviewed for a promotion. The CEO conducted the interview, and we were talking about   management style  when he shared a piece of his philosophy with me. “Sometimes I like to fire someone for no reason just to keep everyone else on their toes,” he said. That was a red flag , but it was one I chose to ignore because I wanted the job. There were many others over the next few months, as I learned that upper management rewarded competency with more work and less help. The CEO - and by extension, the rest of upper management - did not see people as assets. Certainly, that’s not how I operate, and it put me in a situation like my first boss. I could be a buffer for the employees, or everyone could be miserable. I chose to take the burden on myself and spent over a year knowing I had made a mistake. Still, I also learned an important lesson in how to treat people and that when people tell you who and what they are, it’s best to listen.
