Time management is a balancing act (why all your efforts to be more productive backfires)
Time management is a balancing act (why all your efforts to be mora productive backfires)Time management is a balancing act (why all your efforts to be mora productive backfires)There are 168 hours every week. And you have an average of 2,400 minutes to yourself each week. That is amonumentalamount of time. Where could it possibly go? Or better still, where are you spending all those hours? Most of us manage our time the same ways we use to-do lists, planners, task managers, calendars and timers to get things done. We decide our priorities by assessing the relative urgency and importance of them.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThere are many responsibilities claiming chunks of your time.Sometimes, things can get off-balance. And they feel out of control. You feel like a juggler trying not to drop anything. But you can do better.Instead of using tools to cramp your life with tasks, ta ke control of your life, and then structure your daily work around it.Time multipliers ask themselves Whats the most important thing I can do today that would free up more time tomorrow for better life management?By thinking about how you use your time today, you are planning for a better tomorrow. That mindset can help you manage your time and energy better.A multiplier makes choices to save and create more time now and in the future. Many people juggle multiple projects and tasks without limit. And they end up accomplishing little, feel unproductive, but pile on more work the next day, and feel unproductive again. The cycle never ends.At some point, it pays to measure how you work, and do more of what works whilst you create more time for yourself to focus on important tasks every day.If living by strict schedules is not working for you, try something else.Like everything else, time management is a balancing act between what needs to get done and creating time for them. Its about gett ing rid of all the unimportant stuff on your to-do list that makes you think you have so much to do and focusing on actual work.By eliminating, or outsourcing certain activities, you will free up time for the stuff that really makes an impact. The number of tasks you get through in a day is less important than the results they create.Prioritize your time and make room for everything you need to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.Productivity is an experiment in progressThe perfect time management system doesnt exist.Getting things done is personal. Self-awareness has a lot to do with your productivity than you think.Productivity, effectiveness, efficiency and time management require individualization for maximum results, says Kamyar Shah, of World Consulting Group.Even when you have your priorities clear, finding the right time-management system can cost you more time than you think. We always want to solve a problem we have ourselves. And the most recurrent one is the daily mess we have in our own desk, says Hernn Aracena, an entrepreneur who created Effortless, a to-do list app and timer. What worked for Dwight Eisenhower may not work effectively for you. Many techniques evolved as a particular solution for a specific problem someone else had.By all means, try the next productivity system. If it makes you more productive, keep it. If not, scrap it. Rinse and repeat. The right personal productivity method can make ahugedifference in how you work and achieve your goals.A friction-less workflow can take you from feeling overwhelmed, unfocused, and unproductive to feeling calm, in control, and prepared to take on even the biggest projects, writesTricina Elliker.Take control of your time and pursue a healthier relationship with work.Like all things you manage, your time is in your control, so all you need to do is decide how you want to spend it.Protect yourself from tasks overload. Take inventory of your commitments every week. Set boundaries if you have to and co mmit to them. You dont have to schedule activities into every minute of your day. If you are always pressed for time, start measuring how you use it and start making adjustments.Defend your time. You lose more time if you are taking on too many tasks.Remember that if you dont prioritize your life, someone else will, says Greg McKeown.Reclaim your time and suddenly youll have a whole bunch of extra time to work on your life goals, to relax and de-stress yourself, to spend time with family and friends, to read, to improve yourself, to work on a passion project, to exercise. Itll be one of the most important things you do.Key takeawayThere is so much you can do in a single working day.But dont push yourself too hard. Really, dont do it. Its overwhelming and exhausting. You dont need that. The keys to better energy and time management are to keep tasks in check, know what you are committed to, and how they help you achieve your long-term goals.Make today a balancing act. This article first appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

9 Reasons Why You Didnt Make It Past The First Interview
9 Reasons Why You Didnt Make It Past The First Interview9 Reasons Why You Didnt Make It Past The First Interview You breezed through the phone screening and your first bewerbungsinterview went surprisingly well. But weeks go by and you never hear back. If you do end up getting a rejection email, youre left staring numbly at an auto-response with too many clichs and not a single explanation of why you didnt make the cut. And so, the vicious circle continues. How can you improve your interview game when no one is telling you what youre doing wrong? While there are may be different factors at play , Glassdoor Senior Talent Acquisition Partner Jamie Hichens sheds light on nine red flags that can knock job binnenlandseekers out after the first interview. Before speculating on a whole host of things that you could have done wrong, ask yourself honestly if you did everything you could to prepare for the interview. According to Hichens, coming to your first interview unprepared is an immediate red flag. While some things like personality and culture fit are harder to control, anyone can look up interview questions on Glassdoor , check out the LinkedIn and Twitter profiles of your interviewers, and do a Google deep dive on all aspects of the industry.Arriving to your interview at least 10-15 minutes early and bringing extra copies of your resume are also a must, adds Hichens. The first interview is an incredibly important way for an interviewer to gauge if you are truly interested in working there as opposed to just looking for any old job. Thats why Hichens says its crucial to prepare a solid explanation as to why you are interested in the company and position. Ask yourself What first attracted you this company? What about the companys mission/industry resonates with you? How does this position fit into your professional journey and your career aspirations? Visit the companys press page and see what big news its being featured in. Look up t he profiles of key leaders in the company and see if the specific work they are doing inspires you. If you have mutual connections that are company employees, reach out to them and get to know mora about why they love working there. Showing that you have gone above and beyond to make sure this company and position is the one for you will definitely set you apart.Along with preparation and passion, make sure to stay proactive throughout the entire interview process. Interviewers want to see you walk the walk, and asking insightful questions and sending thank you emails are great ways for you to show them just how interested and responsible you are. Hichens is always impressed when candidates ask interviewers questions that help them better understand the job. Bring a notebook and take notes on their answers. After you finish your first interview, Hichens says it is vital to send a thank you email to your interviews within 24-48 hours. Hiring managers always share a candidates thank you email with me when they receive one. Handwritten notes can go far as well, although only as a supplement to thank you emails. If being passive is not your problem, then be wary of having too much of a presence during the interview process . Acting too eager or arrogant will give the interviewer the impression that you are hard to manage . During the interview, your hyper-excited or know-it-all tendencies may compel you to cut the interviewer off mid-question, but avoid interrupting at all costs. It says a lot more if you take a moment to develop a well-thought-out answer with concrete examples. Avoid saying Like and Um repeatedly, Hichens further advises. If you get flustered, take a minute to gather your thoughts and start your answer again. As for emails, quick response times and occasional follow-ups are a plus, but make sure not to overdo it on the communication, Hichens warns. When a candidate overly emails , its a turn-off.According to Hichens, first impressions ar e everything. Eye contact is very important as is a firm handshake. Dont slouch or cross your arms you can keep your hands folded on your lap or right in front of you on the table. As for interview attire , Hichens recommends always dressing a notch up from the dress code (and cleavage is never appropriate). Avoid distracters such as large amounts of makeup/jewelry, strong perfume or flashy hair so that the interviewer can truly focus on what youre saying. And lastly, always practice proper hygiene protocol.During the first interview, its really critical for an interviewer to assess a candidates long-run potential for the position. Its always a hiring managers worst nightmare to invest time and resources on an employee who doesnt intend on sticking around. Be prepared to answer questions such as Where do you see yourself in 2/5/10 years?According to Hichens, questions like these help the interviewer understand what your career aspirations and progression plans are and if t hat fits into what they can offer you as well as if youll stick around long term. When it comes to personality, different types of companies are looking for different types of candidates. For example, at a more formal company (i.e. a bank or law firm) a big personality and sense of humor might not go over as well as it would at an ad agency, Hichens says. Make sure to do some corporate culture research to see how your social skills fit into the picture. It will save time and energy for both parties involved and help you get closer to the job that is best for you. Its also important to learn more about the social dynamics of the specific team you are applying for. If your interviewer says that communal efforts are critical to the teams success, your independent work habits may not be considered a big plus. Hichens notes that being rude or having a bad attitude can be a huge red flag in the first interview. Avoid badmouthing your current company or manager/peers. Treat everyone you encounter with at the company whether it be the front desk manager or the CEO with friendliness and respect . It definitely wont go unnoticed. Moreover, always be gracious and appreciative of the interviewers time, even if you decide halfway through the interview that this isnt the best position or company fit. Hichens explains, Making a positive lasting impression will help you not only in this situation but in the future if you cross paths with these people again, even if you dont get the job.Unless there has been a death in the family or a critical emergency, canceling an interview on the day of is tantamount to saying I dont really want this job and I dont respect you or your time.If you need to adjust the time or youre running late, be transparent. Being late to an interview with no explanation or without emailing or calling ahead to say they are running late. This one will knock out 99% of interviewees, says Jamie Hichens. Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition at Glassdoor. At the very least, if youre running late, call and offer an ETA, an explanation, or an offer to reschedule. And remember to apologize for the inconvenience.

Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid
Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid Using Trains to Send Power to the Grid Using Trains to Send Power to the GridFueled by state mandates to grow the use of renewable energy, solar and wind-powered systems are claiming ever-increasing shares of power production. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports renewable sources now generate 13 percent of the nations power, with wind and solar providing 40 percent of that total. But the intermittent nature of wind and solar production is a problem. That energy must be stored somewhere until demand is high enough for it be fed into the electric grid. Engineers and researchers are looking mostly to batteries for that task, but scaling them up to handle megawatts of power remains elusive and costly. Now, in the southwestern U.S., a California startup is turning to an old but improved standby technology to feed the grid on as as-needed basis.Advanced Energy Rail Storage (ARES) is betting on trains to fill the void. It has developed a mechanical system patterned after pumped-storage hydroelectric projects, which continue to be the most efficient system to provide peaking power. But those projects require lots of land as well as water. Permitting is complex and can take years. ARES points to the simplicity of its system and lower costs as an alternative.Instead of pumping water to an upper reservoir and releasing it back to the lower reservoir, ARES runs trains of ore carriers loaded to 120 tons up a grade when electric demand is low, and then brings them back down when demand is high. Inductive antriebs fitted to the wheels provide power for the uphill run, and then generate electricity on the downhill run. The system has the saatkorn regenerative braking principals as electric cars such as the Toyota Prius or Chevy Bolt.ARES energy storage technology employs a fleet of electric traction drive shuttle-trains. Image ARESWere just using gravity, leid water, says Francesca Cava, ARES vice president of operations. I ts relatively simple, and thats the genius in it really.ARES has filed patents, designed and successfully operated a pilot project in Tehachape, CA. Now, it is building a 50-MW project in Nevada with Valley Electric Association. The utility will provide the interconnection to California, where ARES will sell the ancillary service power. ARES is funding the $55-million project inhouse, mostly through private investment, says Cava.ARES will provide the power through seven trains operating on a 5.5-mile-long track built on an 8-degree grade, gaining about 2,000 feet in elevation. Each train will have two locomotives and seven unpowered rail cars. Each locomotive is weighted to achieve a 38-ton axle loading, says Cava, and the 120-ton cars are loaded with rocks, which operate at a 30-ton axle loading. The locomotives are powered by remanufactured EMD SD-40 bogies converted from DC traction drive to AC traction drive. There is one motor generator per axle, three axles per bogie and two bo gies per locomotive hence six powered axles per locomotive and 12 powered axles per train, she says. The motors reverse to operate as generators on the downhill run. Power is provided to the system via a 25kV overhead catenary system. ARES Nevada vehicles will have an engineered complete Wire to Wheel drive package that will include new high-efficiency dual three-level active inverter/traction control units, Cava adds.Power generating ARES shuttles. Image ARESARES executives see the responsiveness of the system and its low environmental footprint as two large advantages. It can go from full discharge to full charge in 10 seconds in response to the grid operator, which sends signals every four seconds to balance supply and demand. Maximum speed is 20 mph, and Cava says the seven trains can respond to the grids signals, moving up and down the track in small increments as determined by the need.Although a 50-MW system is considered large for a battery-storage project, Cava says the Nev ada project is at the shorter end of its economic scale bigger is better. Its economics are improved by increasing the scale. ARES executives say they could ersatzdarsteller capacity of a 500-MW system and increase capital costs by only 20%ARES Nevada costs are estimated at $4,400 per kWh storage with capital costs of $1,100 per kW. An analysis by Deloitte reports the cost of lithium ion batteries at $1,000 to $2,000 per kW compressed air storage systems at $1,600 to $2,200 per kW pumped hydro storage at $1,200 to $2,100 per kW and flywheel storage at $2,100 to $2,600 per kW.The market is huge, says Cava. California alone has a mandate to add 1.3 GW of storage by 2020. If the country goes more and more to renewable energy, if it goes beyond 30 percent, youll need energy storage. For cities or small towns, batteries may be the answer. But in the West, were not the only alternative but we are the cheapest. While the Tehachapi tests showed the system operates best on grades of six perce nt to eight percent, ARES is already developing plans to adapt the system to steeper grades. Cava says the next demonstration could use a cog railroad. We could operate at a steeper grade over a shorter length, she says, which would open the system up to more terrain. We see the future as fairly soon.Learn more about the latest energy technologies atASMEs Power and Energy. For Further Discussion Were using gravity, not water. Its relatively simple really, and thats the genius in it.Francesca Cava, ARES
